Fixing DFU mode on 10.5.6
As noted previously OS X 10.5.6 introduced a bug that affected the use of DFU mode. with some Macs. There have been previously published hacks and techniques to fix this, but here is another method that can be used to temporarily restore DFU functionality in order to use QuickPwn or PwnageTool.
You will need an account with ADC (Apple Developer Connection) this is free and takes a few minutes to sign up, you should read the terms and conditions carefully and you should only sign up if you are thinking of developing applications in the future - http://developer.apple.com/mac/
Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-315.4-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33” (yes, that is a “5” in 10.5.5 - this is a developer debug package of the USB kernel extension).
Unplug non-vital USB equipment, such as external DVD writers, USB scanners, USB mass storage devices, at the most leave a Keyboard and Mouse connected.
Install IOUSBFamily-315.4.1.pkg from within the disk image
Reboot your system!
Perform necessary DFU activity with QuickPwn or PwnageTool.
Download the disk image IOUSBFamily-327.4.0-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55”
Intall IOUSBFamily-327.4.0.pkg from within the disk image
Reboot your system!

Step-by-Step Guide to Downgrade from iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 to Firmware 2.2

Ziphone Blog

One of the most common problems after Apple releases its the latest firmware update for the iPhone is that some users who have jailbroken their iPhone end up losing the jailbreak and all the jailbreak iPhone apps and if they have unlocked their iPhone end up locking their iPhone if they accidentally upgrade to the latest firmware update.

So when Apple released iPhone firmware 2.2.1 on Tuesday, quite a few readers ended up accidentally upgrading their iPhones to the latest firmware update despite the warning from the Unlocker team.

One of our readers, ezio-xb just commented on our step-by-step guide to downgrade from iPhone firmware 2.2 to 2.1 to tell us that he was able to successfully downgrade his iPhone 3G back to firmware 2.2 and jailbreak it. We have updated the guide to downgrade from iPhone firmware 2.2.1 to firmware 2.2.

Few things you should know based on our post yesterday if you have upgraded to iPhone firmware 2.2.1:

1st gen iPhone users: Since the update does not touch the baseband of the 1st gen iPhone your unlock will remain in place. However to jailbreak your 1st gen iPhone you will need to either wait for the Team to release updated versions of Unlocker tools which will let you jailbreak your 1st gen iPhone running firmware 2.2.1 or use this guide to first downgrade to firmware 2.2 and then jailbreak it.

iPhone 3G users: The Unlocker team should soon release updated versions of their Unlocker tools to jailbreak your iPhone 3G running firmware 2.2.1 or or use this guide to first downgrade to firmware 2.2 and then jailbreak it. But since the latest firmware updates iPhone 3G's baseband to 02.30.03, you will not be able to unlock it even after downgrading to firmware 2.2. You will need to wait for some time for the Unlocker team can unlock baseband 02.30.03.

Please remember that hacking your iPhone could result in voiding your warranty so please proceed with caution.

Before we start with the step-by-step guide, you need to first download iPhone firmware 2.2 (for 1st Gen iPhone, use this direct download link and for iPhone 3G, use this direct download link).
You can then follow these steps to downgrade from iPhone firmware 2.2.1 to firmware 2.2:

Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes. If things had gone horribly wrong while hacking your iPhone and iTunes does not detect your iPhone then you will need to put it in DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode.
You can follow these steps to put your iPhone in DFU mode (this is required only if iTunes does not recognize your iPhone):

Connect your iPhone to your computer.
Turn iPhone off.
Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.

In the Summary Tab, Hold down Option and press the "Restore" button. If you are using Windows hold down Shift and press the Restore button. (This is an important step as just pressing the "Restore" button will result in restoring your iPhone with the latest firmware which is firmware 2.2 currently, by holding down Option in case of Mac or Shift in case of Windows, allows you choose the firmware file that you want to downgrade to.)

You should be able to see all the older iPhone firmware files you had downloaded so far, select iPhone firmware 2.2 file from the download link mentioned earlier (1st Gen iPhone: iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw or iPhone 3G: iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw) to restore your iPhone or browse to the folder where you have downloaded it and select it.
You might get the any of the following errors: 1011, 1013, 1015, you can ignore them. However, if you get errors such as: 1601, 1602, 1600 or anything else then try putting the iPhone into DFU mode and try again.
Your iPhone should now be restored to iPhone firmware 2.2. You can check by going to Settings -> General -> About and looking for Version, it should read 2.2 (5G77).
The last step is to set up your iPhone from a backup

You should then be set to jailbreak your 1st gen iPhone or iPhone 3G and install the jailbreak iPhone apps. You can checkout our step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G for Mac users or step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G for Windows users.

We haven't tried this yet on the iPhone 3G as we haven't upgraded to iPhone firmware 2.2.1. One of our readers, ezio-xb has reported that he was able to use this procedure to downgrade his iPhone 3G from firmware 2.2.1 to firmware 2.2 and then successfully jailbreak it.

He commented:

"FYI; I just made the BIG mistake to update my Jailbraked 3g-iPhone with 2.2.1 (with the Safari blah blah update) which totally mess up my phone and put it back to "normal".
I found your guide and I downgrade back to 2.2 using the ...shift+restore option that you suggest for previously firmware in the upper article (!than you!)
After all the process and the long restore point I was able also to Jailbreak and now works as it was before and just need to fix my icons."

Apple releases 2.2.1 of iPhone and iPod Touch operating system

Apple has released version 2.2.1 of its iPhone and iPod Touch operating system. While not a significant update, several minor changes have been made to the smartphone's OS. Users looking forward to copy and paste features and push notifications may be disappointed by the update.

Version 2.2.1 features several bug fixes and improvements including improved stability of Safari, its mobile web browser. It also fixes an issue where images attached in Mail did not display in the Camera Roll, and fixed an issue that caused Apple Lossless (ALAC) audio files to skip during playback on the iPod Touch. Users can update their devices by loading iTunes, plugging in their iPhone of iPod Touch, and clicking the "Check for Updates" button on their screen

Ziphone Blog jailbreak ipod touch 2g

Here is the first screenshot of a jailbroken iPod Touch 2G. Right now the jailbreak process is far too manual to be useful to most people. But this is a first step (well, second step if you include the initial exploit).

When we announced Unlocker iPhone, we made the mistake of giving an ETA for its release…and that really clobbered the last day of 2008 for us. So we won’t be issuing a formal ETA for the ipt2G jailbreak. But we are putting a lot of energy into it.

Ziphone Blog How to Put an iPhone 3G Into DFU Mode

DFU means Device Firmware Update. If a restore using Recovery Mode doesn't work you will want to use DFU Mode as a last resort. When placing your iPhone into DFU Mode it does not load the OS before attempting the restore
To put the iPhone into DFU mode so you can do an iTunes firmware restore follow these steps:

Step One
Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac.

Step Two
Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time

Step Three
After exactly 10 seconds release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until you iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
The iPhone screen will remain black like this:
NOTE***: It may take a few attempts to get your iPhone into DFU mode. Generally, I hold down both buttons then release the Home button just before I think the Apple logo would appear. If you are still holding both buttons down and you see the Apple logo you are holding them down for too long!

Important: Be Careful with Latest QuickTime Update if you have Re-enabled DFU Mode in Mac OS X 10.5.6

Though the simple steps to re-enable DFU Mode in Mac OS X 10.5.6 had helped few readers to re-enable the DFU mode in Mac OS X 10.5.6 which earlier prevented Mac from recognizing iPhone in DFU mode, making it impossible to jailbreak and unlock it using Unlocker iPhone, it had also caused serious problems for some of our readers.

At that time we had immediately updated the post warning users to proceed with caution and later to avoid it based on feedback from readers.

Wilson Rothman from Gizmodo who had followed the steps outlined by Gizmodo in this post via the same source that we had referred Hackint0sh ran into problems after couple of weeks.

His Warning message:

"Be careful with that latest QuickTime update if you have run any "DFU fix" Automator scripts"

He also narrates his experience, how he resolved the problem and some tips for all those who might have used the hack or have faced the problem.

The 10.5.6 update for Mac OS X Leapord that Apple released in December prevented Mac from recognizing iPhone in DFU mode, making it impossible to jailbreak and/or unlock it using Unlocker iPhone.

Gizmodo like us had also published steps to Re-enable DFU Mode in Mac OS X 10.5.6 to Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone.

Wilson tried out this hack to re-enable DFU mode on his unibody MacBook Pro. He did not face any issue for couple of weeks, but disaster struck when he updated his MacBook Pro with the latest version of Quicktime.

He explains:

When my system restarts, I have no access to keyboard or trackpad. Not only do I not have access, I can't even plug in a mouse or keyboard. I could use those controls when booting off of a system install disc, but I couldn't get the installer to repair my OS, since it was "newer." The computer was borked.

Here is how he fixed his issue:

My solution was easy but nuclear: I turned an external 320GB drive into a boot disk, ran the migration tool to move every bit of data from my unibody MBP, then simply swapped drives. (Gotta hand it to Apple for that new swappable-drive design.) My machine is as good as new, and now totally up to date.

He highlights:

The now-mysteriously-missing original Hackintosh article mentioned that there were some issues with the unibody MacBook and MacBook Pros, but it never said that you should undo it after you finish jailbreaking.

He points to some other solutions such as:

if you already ran the DFU script and haven't installed that Quicktime update yet, is try the method I have since discovered outlined in this Apple Support thread.
If you still have access to your keyboard and mouse, you can copy the backup files (it should be under Backup_IOUSBFamily_kext_10_5_6 on your desktop) to where the automator script was, Install_IOUSBFamily_kext_10_5_5 on your desktop. Then, just run the automator script again, and it will copy those "original" files to the right location, then change the permissions correctly and reboot your machine.
If you already ran the Quicktime update and you're unable to access any input (USB or otherwise), you can SSH into your machine and run these commands one by one. If you had trouble with the automator script, you can open up the terminal and do this too, manually. Note, some of these lines are too long, so they wrap to 2 lines. Make sure you copy it in its entirety. Commands are separated by empty lines inbetween.

sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext
You'll have to enter your administrator password here

sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext

sudo cp -R $HOME/Desktop/Backup_IOUSBFamily_kext_10_5_6/AppleUSBHub.kext /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/

sudo cp -R $HOME/Desktop/Backup_IOUSBFamily_kext_10_5_6/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext

sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext

sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext

sudo rm -r /System/Library/Extensions.mkextprivileges

sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions

sudo reboot

Your machine will reboot after prompting to update boot caches, and the files should be back to the standard 10.5.6 ones.
Some readers who had used the hack faced this issue even before updating to the latest QuickTime update, so we suggest we follow the solutions provided above. As always, please proceed with caution.

In case your Mac is not recognizing your iPhone in DFU mode, then you should use one of these to be on the safe side:

Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable

Please make sure you are looking under the right section. If you have an older iPhone, you MUST download the firmware under “iPhone 2G Firmware”. That also means, if you have an iPhone 3G, you must download the firmware under “iPhone 3G Firmware”. Our guides explain this in more detail, but if you are getting an error while restoring, it is most likely not having the right firmware. There ARE other causes, but not having the correcrt firmware for the appropriate device is a big hiccup in the process. These are big files so make sure you know which ones you want!

Apple News | The iPhone xiphone.org Unlocks the 2.2 Baseband

The iPhone xiphone.org has just posted a screenshot of a 2.2 baseband that appears to have been unlocked.

Before this breakthrough, if you updated to 2.2 through iTunes without a custom firmware file, you could not unlock your iPhone 3G.

However, according to the screenshot, it is now possible to unlock any 3G iPhone.

Summary: The new iPod touch 2G has not been jailbroken yet!

A lot of people lately have been asking where the jailbreak for 2G is, or if it's jailbreakable. Well, yes, it is jailbreakable as it always will be. Nothing is perfect and the dev team's will always find a way. How complicated that way becomes is the issue.

The current status of the jailbreak is that it's not ready. A week ago, the official iPhone Dev Team said they were testing hardware related jailbreaks, which is a good and a bad thing. It's a good thing because it means they think they found a way to get in. The bad thing, it's hardware related. What does that mean? It means if you want to do it, it might require opening up your iPod and messing around with it's insides.

As far as a soft jailbreak, something like Quickpwn, or Pwnage, it's not looking like it's coming any time soon. I'm just as far out of the inside of the dev team as everyone else here, but unless the dev team is hiding information from us, it's not coming for a while. They are avoiding patching iTunes in this jailbreak and they haven't established a solid, stable way of communicating two way with the ipod touch yet. This is all because of the new processor.

I hope this is enough information for people to stop posting new topics about the jailbreak because it will happen, just be patient. We should be thanking the dev team instead of whining about the delay of the jailbreak. For God sake, they don't even accept donations as a thank you, yet you are complaining? It seems that half the people here are buying iPod Touchs for the Jailbreak, which is completely wrong. Understand that these people are putting so much time out of their lives to do this, and they offer it free.

Update: I honestly can't believe some of the comments and threads I'm reading. "If it's only a hard jailbreak, I'm out." No one invited you to jailbreak and no one is making you do it so just leave you ungrateful little ignorant moron. You know how horrible that is? Do you even understand the time these teams put in and require nothing to be given back to them? I can't believe that people like this actually exist in this world.

Simple Guide To Unlock iPhone 3G "ziphone"

While Canadians can get their iPhone fix directly from Rogers or Fido, there are still a lot of parts of the world where the iPhone isn’t quite as available.

Further still, you may want to take your AT&T iPhone for use in Canada, for example, so that’s why you’d want to unlock the thing. This hasn’t been the easiest of tasks, but it has now happened!

With the arrival of firmware 2.2 for the iPhone 3G, the unlocking process got a little more complicated by the trusty iPhone Unlocked iPhone 3G has created a solution that they call Unlock iPhone 3G. Don’t eat it. Just use it.

There are effectively six basic steps that you’ll need to do if you want to unlock an Apple iPhone 3G with firmware 2.2. Bear in mind that you are doing this under your own risk and you are 100% responsible for anything that may (or may not) happen as a result.

32GB iPhone 3G coming? Apple rumors "ziphone"

Rumors are gaining momentum that a 32GB iPhone might soon come out from the Apple stable… Apparently the iPod touch was released in a 32GB version way back in 2007, however much against the market expectations Steve Jobs didn’t announce a 32 GB iPhone 3G in June.

But speculators are suggesting the shortage of 8GB version as the trigger for a 32GB iPhone! We really don’t know if the 32GB will come anytime soon, but then would you pay Rs 40,000 for a 32GB iPhone???

iPhone Unlocking Benefits
Today we will discuss some benefits of unlocking the iPhone.

First we should explain what unlocking means: Unlocking means breaking free from your current carrier.
After you unlock the iPhone you will be able to use any SIM card from any carrier in your iPhone.

When you buy an iPhone, the phone will most likely be “locked” to the AT&T network ( in the US) to O2 in the UK, or to T-mobile in various European countries. Your iPhone is locked to the network from the carrier where you bought your iPhone from. It is not possible to use any other SIMcard in your locked iPhone. The lock in the phone prevents the phone to receive any signal.
Carriers like AT&T require you to buy a 2-year contract when you purchase the iPhone. Unless you unlock the phone you will only be able to use the original AT&T ( or O2) SIMcard in your phone.

When you unlock your iPhone, you will be able to use any SIMcard & Any Carrier that you wish.

The benefits are clear: you will be able to use cheap local (pay as you go) simcards in the phone, and make phone calls at cheaper local rates. ( instead of using the expensive roaming services) You can use the iPhone on cheaper networks ( especially data rates are often very expensive on the standard iPhone carriers) You can use more then one phone number on the iPhone, and switch your simcard at any time you wish.

Of course you can always use the original AT&T ( or O2) simcard after unlocking. The unlock does not affect the way your iPhone works ( if you use a good unlocking service) it only enables the phone to accept any simcard.

Other benefits of unlocking your iPhone are the addition of and installer on the unlocked iPhone.
Our application also jailbreaks the iPhone so you can download 1000’s of software applications to your iPhone Freely. More info about Jailbreaking and activating the iPhone soon!

ziphone 2.2 download

Please accept my apologies.
A stupid bug in 2.1 didn't allow my "Z" icon to be deleted
and caused some minor problems.
A stupid typo.
In the download frame you now have ZiPhone 2.2.
Nothing changed. Bug removed.
And now some rest.. then back for new features shortly
in the next days..
Thanks to joserg for the picture!
Note:
ZiPhone never bricked a phone so far.
IPSF or 'freeipsf' users can't upgrade to 4.03.. because isf method corrupts
the baseband (and apple checked that in 4.03).
You can still use ziphone -u option.

Ziphone 3.0

ZiPhone 3.0 is now on download site for
you all to enjoy.
I decided to release it for everyone since MANY
are helping supporting sponsors.
And it would not have been fair to them.
I suggest you to do a restore to 1.1.4
not an update. Because installer keeps old
installed apps in it's cache and you would have problems.
Hoping people at nullriver software resolve that soon.
After restore to 1.1.4, just use "ziphone -Z Y" or the first
button on GUI versions.

Have fun !
And thanks to everyone for supporting and caring!

Stay tuned ! More interesting things are coming up on this site!

Namaste!

Did Apple make a Major Policy Change by Approving Web Browsing Apps for the iPhone?

The blogosphere is buzzing with the news that Apple has made a major policy change by approving 3rd party web browsing apps for the iPhone in the last 24 hours.

MacRumors is reporting that the web browsing applications that have got approved have original submission dates ranging as far back as October, indicating that they have made a policy change recently.

However, does this change in policy mean that we will see Opera Mini or Firefox Mobile apps for the iPhone?

Before I try to answer that question here are the list of 3rd party web browsing applications for the iPhone that were approved by Apple in the last 24 hour (courtesy MacRumors):

* Edge Browser (Free) - No loss of screen real estate to the address or navigation bars.
* Incognito ($1.99) - Now you can browse without leaving a history of any kind.
* WebMate:Tabbed Browser ($0.99) - Web Mate simplifies browsing by queuing up all the links you click on, then allowing you to view them one by one when you're ready.
* Shaking Web ($1.99) - adds a sophisticated algorithm to compensate for small hand shaking to allow for easier reading.

Quite frankly, they don't appear to be full-blown web browser applications, they merely seem to be applications which are all based on Safari's version of WebKit.

Gizmodo is spot on with the description of these apps:
"In a sense, they're like browser extensions, but which can only run one at a time and as completely separate apps."

And that is probably the reason these iPhone apps were approved by Apple. Though the only thing that seems unanswered; is the reason for approving some of these 3rd party web browsing applications for the iPhone only now.

Will this mean that full-blown browsers like Opera Mini, Firefox Mobile will be approved as iPhone apps? It is highly unlikely. If you have a been a regular reader here at iPhone Hacks, you will remember that Stephenson von Tetzchner, co-founder and CEO of Opera had given the following reason for halting development of their iPhone app while there were quite a few speculations that Opera Mini had got rejected from the App Store.
"Development was halted after the company looked at the details of the license agreement in Apple’s software development kit and realized that it would not be permitted. We stopped the work because of the prohibitive license"

Should Apple allow full-blown browsers like Opera Mini? Absolutely, just like we can use the browser of our choice on the computer, we should be able to use any browser we want on the iPhone. I love iPhone's Safari browser so convincing me to switch to some other browser will be an uphill task.

But more importantly, it will keep Apple honest and will ensure that they are innovating more aggressively though based on their impressive track record such external pressure is not really required.

What do you think?

Thanks Josh for the tip!

ziphone 3.0

Well, here I am still...
The picture above is not a fake.
It's not even a major breakthru but it's something.
I am glad to tell you anyhow that 2.0
firmware works pretty well on my iPod 32gb.
All features are enabled.
To install it from windows (or mac) you need
a special beta version of itunes.
Unless you want to loose installer
and all third party apps I strongly suggest you
NOT TO UPGRADE (both iPod both iPhone).
To downgrade the iPod you will need
to uninstall iTunes 7.7 and reinstall 7.5.
Then you will need to put the iPod in DFU mode
and do a full restore back to 2.2 (and use ZiPhone)
to have back Installer and all goodies.
With the iPhone it's more complicated
because you will also need to
downgrade the baseband.
I already have a very preliminary version
of the new ZiPhone which will allow that.

As of today you will have 2 choices:
1) Believe in the community and don't upgrade to 2.0
2) Say goodbye to Installer and freedom and upgrade.
